The district school board required a solution whereby the 24,000 iBooks issued to middle and high school students could be controlled and protected without using network resources in order to conserve bandwidth on the wireless network. It was also important to achieve this without compromising or changing the Finder interface so the students could enjoy the full experience of the Macintosh computers.

The solution had to provide the method of protecting the operating system files, folders and applications in order to minimize the maintenance tasks of the technical support team. It also had to prevent unauthorised applications running from CD's, even when such CD's were disguised as authorized applications. The protection had to be in place whether the computers were connected to the network, or off the network.

After an intensive period of investigation and evaluations of other security products available, MacPrefect 5 was selected.
