MacPrefect 5.4 X is an extensive desktop security software solution for Macintosh computers running Mac OS X, from Mac OS X 10.2.4 to Mac OS X 10.4.x. MacPrefect protects each machine unobtrusively from user error to levels determined by the system administrator.
This award-winning software has become the de facto security standard in educational and corporate environments where multiple users have access to Macintosh computers.
MacPrefect saves many hours of an administrator's time previously spent tidying and repairing damage caused either accidentally or deliberately by users. It maintains a standard desktop without changing the finder interface, or compromising the user's experience.

Security
Users are not aware that the protection software is running, until an action that has been disabled within the configured protection setting is attempted. Configurable dialogues warn the user why the requested action may not be performed.
MacPrefect is ideal for environments where the computers are operated and shared by many users. Protection settings may be configured, saved and set on machines to allow for different levels of experience, or access to appropriate applications or controls.
Protection
Protection settings can be configured and saved for use as required. The protection settings file may then be activated on the individual Macintosh computer through secured access to the machine.
MacPrefect is suitable for both stand-alone and networked computers. Within a networked environment, protection settings files may be saved and secured on a server, from where they can be distributed to individual machines and automatically activated as required.

Configuring MacPrefect
Configuring protection settings for MacPrefect is extremely simple. Each category of protection is accessed from the main control application. When applicable, MacPrefect automatically searches the hard disk or volumes and provides a list of items for control. The administrator may then select between denying all, allowing all, or specifying lists for both allowed and denied items.
Extensive drag and drop technology between the allowed and denied lists, or from the finder interface to MacPrefect dialogues, makes the process both efficient and easy to use. Each setting file created in this way may then be saved, ready for activation on the required Macintosh computers.
